DrDoctor achieves first-of-its-kind NHS App integration

LONDON, UK, 16 September 2025DrDoctor, the UK’s leading patient engagement platform, has today announced the connection of Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, into the NHS App.

As the first Epic EPR trust in the UK to go live into the NHS App via DrDoctor, this first-of-its-kind integration marks a major milestone towards the Wayfinder goal of integrating 100% of acute trusts into the NHS App.

The news comes two months after the DHSC (Department of Health and Social Care) announced its 10-Year Health Plan, which set developing the NHS App as the standardised patient portal as a main priority and represents an important step in demonstrating that integration with the NHS App is now possible across all major EPR/PAS providers.

The integration was made possible thanks to DrDoctor’s agnostic platform, which means that any trust, regardless of EPR/PAS provider can connect seamlessly to the NHS App and take advantage of the full suite of features available, without needing to leave the App. This includes viewing, amending and cancelling appointments, notifications and messaging, managing documents, questionnaires and providing past appointment history – giving patients more ownership over their care journey.

At Birmingham Women’s and Children’s, DrDoctor worked in partnership with the trust’s integration team to transform Epic’s outbound data feeds for use in DrDoctor’s Patient Engagement Platform. DrDoctor then reformatted this information and provided a corresponding feed into the NHS App enabling the relevant functionality to be surfaced for patients.

This means that more than 50,000 women, men and families served by the trust each year will now be able to access key information about their appointments directly within the NHS App including:

  • Appointment management: Viewing, amending and cancelling appointments digitally.

  • App notifications and messaging: Appointments and letters configured in DrDoctor’s portal – new, reminders and cancellations – will be available digitally.

  • Documents surfaced in the Documents and Questionnaire Management mailbox.

  • Setting their paperless preference directly through the app.

DrDoctor’s Transformation and Integration teams also worked closely with the trust to oversee both the technical integration and the operational changes required, ensuring a smooth rollout.

Nick Barlow, Transformation Director at DrDoctor says, “We’re moving towards a new and modern version of the NHS. The right technological innovations are out there and being implemented, but the next step is to ensure they work together seamlessly and at no cost to patients or staff. By integrating with Epic at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s and connecting them to the NHS App, we’ve shown that trusts can deliver joined-up patient engagement quickly, securely and without disruption. Our goal is to make interoperability real, helping trusts unlock value from existing investments while giving patients a simpler, more connected experience.”

Jalil Mohammed, Senior Improvement Lead at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s adds, “At Birmingham Women’s and Children’s, we’re always looking for ways to empower our patients and families, and this integration helps us deliver on that ambition by putting more control directly into their hands.  We’re delighted to be the first Epic EPR trust to integrate with the NHS App through DrDoctor. This is a really important step in making healthcare more accessible and convenient for our patients, giving them a single, trusted place to manage their appointments and key information”.
