This weekend she will take on the London to Brighton challenge, walking 100km from Richmond Park in the capital to Brighton.

Ms Knight, who has also worked shifts at East Surrey Hospital since 2008, has travelled the world running marathons, from London and Dublin to Florida and New York, despite undergoing numerous operations including a knee replacement.

She said: “I love keeping fit and challenging myself, and after I completed my 50th marathon I said I would do 60 before my 60th birthday. Fingers crossed I’ll achieve that this weekend!

“A few years ago, I received such excellent care whilst in hospital for an operation on my lower spine and since then I’ve tried to do what I can to give something back – I wasn’t going to let a few operations stop me,” she said.

Michael Wilson, chief executive of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “Kate is a real inspiration to everyone at SASH and this is a remarkable achievement.

“We are hugely grateful that she is raising money that will make such a difference to our patients and our staff,” he said.
