Video: Students reflect on their journey to becoming a nurse

During the Student Nursing Times Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel, nursing students came together to celebrate their achievements and reflect on their training.

Student nurse, Donna Walker, from the University of South Wales explained how she had always wanted to work within an accident and emergency department from a young age.

For Ms Walker, she felt that picking the right university was “key” to her training.

Meanwhile, Adam Miguel who is in his final year of adult nursing at Swansea University, said he would encourage anyone considering a career in the profession to just “do it”.

He explained how his time studying at Swansea had opened up a wealth of opportunities for him as a trainee nurse.

In addition, student midwife, Lara Carter from the Anglia Ruskin University, reflected on the challenges she faced during her training. She described how important it was to work to overcome them.

Martine Heatley, who is training in children’s nursing, said before starting at Swansea University she was concerned about whether becoming a nurse was something she could achieve.

The students all attended the awards last Friday which celebrated the achievements of trainee nurses and their educators.

In total there were over 170 shortlisted across 21 categories. With more than 600 applications 2019 was a record-breaking year for the event.
