Ruth Smith has been promoted to CEO of Active Care Group – the UK’s leading national provider of rehabilitation and complex care services for children, young people and adults.
Prior to her promotion, Ruth served as the Group’s Chief Operating Officer following the acquisition in 2019 of Christchurch Group, the leading provider of award-winning clinically-led neurorehabilitation services for patients with acquired brain injury (ABI), spinal injury and other neurological conditions, where she had held the position of CEO. At Christchurch Ruth spearheaded improvements across the company’s 10 centres – 100% of which are now rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission – and improved outcomes for patients – 86% of which returned home after a period of rehabilitation.
Ruth brings a wealth of experience to her new role at Active Care, beginning her career in a purely clinical setting as a specialist brain injury rehabilitation nurse and progressing into Quality Assurance, Health and Social Care management positions. Her insight and expertise span both the front line and managerial challenges of the sector.
Ruth – an individual of proven integrity – employs role-models-values-based leadership to command the confidence and trust of all stakeholders. She has a clear understanding of the Group’s core values and culture, possesses significant business acumen and has a sound grasp of its business strategies.
During her time as COO at Active Care Group, Ruth demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities and led a restructure of its six divisions spanning residential and supported living, care in the home, Christchurch rehabilitation services, Remeo respiratory services, case management and Jane Lewis Healthcare Recruitment Solutions. The Group brings together over 40 care providers to form a progressive, integrated, specialist healthcare business with a national footprint and unique focus on complex care. It employs over 4000 staff who support more than 2000 clients across 60+ locations in England, Scotland and Wales. The key changes that Ruth has made have contributed positively to the Group’s trading position.
Commenting on her promotion, Ruth Smith, CEO, said, “I’m thrilled to be leading our excellent team who between them boast 30 years of specialist knowledge and experience in managing complex conditions including ventilation and respiratory, spinal injury, brain injury, epilepsy, neurological conditions and learning disabilities. All staff employ an innovative, holistic, user-centred approach designed to help individuals to progress towards a more independent future and to lead their best life. I’m proud to be at the helm.”
